I think there is so much to this command from God. Understanding a few simple truths from Genesis has given me liberty in many areas of my life. I’m confident you will be encouraged as you read my post today!
Genesis 1:28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.
Fruitful defined in the CWSB Dictionary: A verb meaning to be fruitful, to flourish. It indicates the multiplication and successful production of fruit, offspring, or flavors from living fruits, vegetables, animals, or human beings: human offspring.
What is God thinking?
When I read these scriptures it becomes clear to me that God has “fruitfulness” on His mind when He looks at us, mankind, men and women, His creation. In simply looking at the definition of the Hebrew word and focusing on “flavors” a new understanding of God’s goodness and blessing enters my soul. It seems easy to look at these verses and simply think it means to have a lot of children. While God is definitely speaking to this, I don’t think we should over look the ‘multiplication & successful production of fruit or flavors from living fruits, vegetables, animals or human beings.’
What a powerful word multiplication is. While 2 + 2 + 2 = 6, 2 x 2 x 2 = 8. With these simple numbers it may not seem like much of a difference. Add some zeros to the ends of those numbers ad the difference is quite a gap! I like to think of “be fruitful” as one of God’s very first blessings or promises to mankind. In God’s mind and heart, it seems, that multiplication is the method of increase. Not addition, division or subtraction. Multiplication is the ‘math’ of the Kingdom.
The part about flavors is my absolute favorite part of this definition. Not only are we blessed to have multiplied abundance, but also flavors. I like to think about things simply. Consider cell phones. There are numerous brands, carriers, operating systems, apps, preferences, gadgets like watches and earpieces. Cellphones have many flavors. To me, I see evidence of the Blesser (God) in the “flavors” mankind creates from the multiplied fruit God has bestowed on us.
No no, this is not about cannibalism, it’s about the “produce” of mankind’s hands. Than means the work you do, weather its hobbies or your career. It seems to me that God has blessed us in such a way that we are born with abilities and desires to “spice up” our lives, be successful, and live from abundance. What a promise! As God was blessing both Adam and Noah, He was blessing even their children! That’s good! God is good and can only do good to you and I!
Take it Home
Consider for a moment what your life would be like if you believed, trusted and lived from a position of the promise that you will succeed, prosper, multiply and have a pleasing variety in life.
